As caregivers, we need to recharge and engage in our own health— as we continue to care for our communities. We care about your heart and encourage you to care for it, too. Thank you for doing your part so you can take care of our patients and your fellow teammates.
In recognition of Heart Health Month, we encourage you to:
Know Your Risk Factors: Did you know that 1 in 2 adults have high blood pressure yet only 1 in 4 have it under control to <130/80 mmHg? If left uncontrolled, high blood pressure can increase a person’s risk for heart disease, stroke and other health conditions. Know your risks by participating in routine health screenings including blood pressure checks.
Eat A Healthy Diet: Make healthy food choices like more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Aim to include more plant-based meals or lean meats, and low-fat dairy products. Eat less salt, saturated fat and added sugar to help prevent heart disease and stroke. A Mediterranean-style diet is a great option.
Move More, Sit Less: Get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week, plus muscle strengthening activities at least two days per week. Try to take standing breaks and learn simple ways to increase your daily movement on the Fitness page.
Get Enough Sleep: Adults who sleep less than seven hours each night are more likely to say they have had health problems,* including heart attacks and heart disease. Visit the Healthy Sleep Habits page to assess your sleep habits.

Marcellous learned he had high blood pressure while having his vitals checked before an Atrium Health Floyd blood drive. Now he encourages all teammates to put their health first and have their vitals checked at annual preventive exams along with focusing on nutrition, exercise, medication compliance and avoiding tobacco.
