Teammates

At Atrium Health, we strive to meet the many needs of our patients and families. The Language Access team is committed to facilitating the delivery of healthcare in ways that are culturally sensitive, effective and easy to understand. Language Services strives to bridge communication gaps between patients and providers, reduce barriers to accessing quality healthcare, and advocate for patients and family members with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Our mission is that the care experience of the LEP patient will reflect as closely as possible to that of the non-LEP patient.

Our Atrium Health Language access team includes over 120 professional medical interpreters that are culturally competent, have a vast knowledge of medical terminology, and interact with patients and medical professionals on a daily basis.

It is important to understand the options, resources, and laws related to language access. We encourage all teammates to complete the Language Access at Atrium Health eLearning module on PeopleLink.

How to Connect with Language Access

All of Atrium Health's care locations are equipped to interpreting services to patients and families in need, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is achieved via in-person, video interpreting and phone interpreting:

  • In-person Interpreting: Facilities with communication devices such as HALO phones may be used to call interpreters. Otherwise, you may call (704) 381-TALK to obtain/schedule an onsite interpreter. You may also fill out an In-Person Interpreter Request form
  • Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) combines high-tech and high-touch to bring language access to the bedside quickly and at the touch of a button. Please click this link to learn more about Video Remote Interpreting, including information on requesting equipment.
  • Over-the-Phone Interpreting (OPI): (704) 381-TALK is the number for all facilities, available 24/7. This feature provides you access to over 240 languages with an average connection time of 30 seconds.

Document Translation

While interpreting professionals work with the spoken word, translation involves the conversion of written material from one language to another. It is important that Atrium Health collateral and patient forms are written in a language that our patients can understand. To request document translation, please fill out a Translation Project Request form. Please upload the document(s) to be translated and a member of our team will contact you.

Bilingual Teammates

Hiring leaders are encouraged to hire bilingual teammates wherever possible, as this practice reduces costs and greatly enhances the care experience for our patients. Per Atrium Health policy and federal guidelines, all bilingual teammates who wish to leverage their language skills must demonstrate full language competency. Leaders may request language testing by filling out a Language Assessment Request form
