Find the Right Health Plan for You

The Health Plan Decision Support Tool is available to help teammates decide which health plan is best for them. The tool guides teammates through a series of questions. Based on their answers, teammates will see a side-by-side comparison of the expenses under both Atrium Health Greater Charlotte LiveWELL Health Plans.

The Teammates Site contains only highlights of your LiveWELL Health Plans benefits for eligible teammates and is subject to review and modification. Every effort has been made to report information accurately, but the possibility of error exists. In addition, not every health plan detail of every benefit that may matter to you could be included on this site. The Atrium Health program is governed by the official plan documents. In case of any conflict between this site and an official plan document, the plan document will be the final authority. Please refer to your plan document or Summary Plan Descriptions on the Summary Plan Documents page for a full explanation of covered services, exclusions and limitations. If there is a discrepancy between this site and legal plan documents, the plan documents will control information about all the benefits available.

*Teammates are to be in an active employment status and enrolled in one of the Atrium Health medical plans at the time of payout in order to receive earned incentive(s).

Teammates in full-time positions with an annual base salary of $38,000 or less will receive an additional $200 contribution from Atrium Health to either their Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or LiveWELL Incentive Account per plan eligibility.

The 2024 LiveWELL Health Plans Frequently Asked Questions

When is Annual Enrollment?

Annual Enrollment occurred Wednesday, Oct. 18, through Friday, Nov. 3, 2023.

Enrollment will be completed in CORE Connect.

Can I switch my health plan election (from the Health Savings Plan to the Co-Pay Plan or vice versa) after Annual Enrollment?
No. IRS regulations do not allow changes between health plans during the year, with the exception of a Qualifying Life Event (QLE).

With a QLE, a change in your health plan election can be made, but accumulators will restart at the date of eligibility with the QLE. For example, if you were enrolled in the Health Savings Plan and had paid toward the deductible, then switched to the Co-Pay Plan at the time of your QLE, there will not be any credit given for the deductible amounts paid during the prior eligibility.

Why should I designate or update beneficiaries on my Life Insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA) and Retirement accounts?
One of the best ways to care for your family’s financial health is to establish beneficiary designations on your life insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA), if applicable, and retirement accounts. Ensuring your beneficiaries are assigned and up-to-date gives you control of where your assets go and provides your family with peace of mind.

How do I designate or update beneficiaries?

Follow the steps to designate or update beneficiaries for your Life Insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA) and Atrium Health Retirement Accounts outlined on the Update Your Beneficiaries page on the 2024 Compensation and Benefits site.

When can I make designations or updates to my beneficiaries?
You can designate beneficiaries at the time of enrollment and update them any time of the year, as often as needed.

If I am a temporary teammate or a Contract Worker, will I have the opportunity to enroll in benefits?
Temporary teammates and Contract Workers are not eligible for benefits.

I currently have VA or Tricare benefits as a veteran. Should I enroll in health plan benefits at Atrium Health?

  • If you enroll in health plans at Atrium Health your VA and Tricare coverage will become secondary; you will be responsible for out-of-pocket expenses.
  • A Health Savings Account (HSA) cannot be elected when on a governmental plan.
Do your research to determine which plan will provide the best coverage at the best price for you and/or your family. For more information:

When I am completing my health plan enrollment and electing coverage for my spouse, how do I know when to choose the Working Spouse option?
The working spouse surcharge ($50 per bi-weekly pay period) applies if your covered spouse is eligible for medical coverage through their employer (not applicable if your spouse works for Atrium Health), but you choose to enroll them in one of the LiveWELL Health Plans. The rates for these options are higher in order to offset the increased cost of covering spouses who have access to other coverage.

If my spouse is self-employed, do I elect the Working Spouse option?
The working spouse rate only applies if your covered spouse is eligible for medical coverage through their work.

Are part-time teammates eligible to enroll in medical benefits?
Teammates who have 20 or more standard hours per week (40 or more standard hours per pay period) are eligible to enroll in one of the health plans.

If I add a dependent to my medical, dental or vision benefits, do I have actions to take to verify their eligibility as a dependent?
Yes, please look for communication mailed to your home, following the completion of your enrollment, providing instructions for submitting documentation to verify the eligibility of your dependent(s). Please respond to the actions outlined in the communication; it is time-sensitive and necessary to complete the enrollment for your dependent(s).

If I elect the Health Savings Plan in 2024:

Can I make changes to my contribution to the Health Savings Account (HSA) anytime during the year?
Yes.  Changes to HSA paycheck contributions can be completed in CORE Connect. Please note, when electing your HSA contribution amount, it is a per pay period amount.

Job Aid - HSA - Enroll in, Change, or Make One-Time Contribution

For assistance, please contact Atrium Health Benefits at 704-631-1500, Option 1.

What is the IRS maximum contribution limit for the HSA in 2024?
For Teammate only coverage, the maximum is $4,150. For Family coverage, it is $8,300. Please keep in mind that contributions by you and Atrium Health combined count toward the annual maximum limit.

Note, there is a catchup contribution for teammates age 55 or older – up to $1,000.

If I am enrolled in the Health Savings Plan, where will my LiveWELL Incentives I earn be deposited?
In 2024, teammates will have the opportunity to earn up to 3 incentives by completing LiveWELL activities and programs. Incentive opportunities for those enrolled in the Health Savings Plan are up to $750 for teammate only coverage or up to $1,500 for family coverage.

If you are enrolled in the Health Savings Plan, and you have an active Health Savings Account (HSA) with at least $1 contribution per pay period, LiveWELL Incentives you earn will be deposited into your HSA.

If you are enrolled in the Health Savings Plan without an active HSA, your LiveWELL Incentives will be paid as taxable earnings in your paycheck. (Typical reasons for not having an active HSA include coverage on a governmental plan such as Medicare or TRICARE).

Can I contribute my incentives, such as PPI, MAIP, APP incentives, or PTO Cash-in into my HSA to realize the tax savings benefit?
Yes. Look for communications near the time of payout to make your contribution election.

Note, that when you elect to make a one-time contribution to your HSA, it is counted as part of your annual contribution. Therefore, the amount you contribute per pay period will be adjusted accordingly. For example, if you elected during Annual Enrollment to contribute $2,600 annually to your HSA, your per pay period contribution will be $100 if you are on the bi-weekly payroll ($2,600 divided by 26 pay periods). If later in the year, you make a one-time contribution of $500 to your HSA, and there have already been 10 pay periods in the year, your new per paycheck contribution will be $68.75. (The calculation: $2,600 minus $1,000 (10 pay periods at $100 each), minus the $500 one-time contribution equals $1,100.  Divide $1,100 by the remaining 16 pay periods for the year which equals $68.75).

Please keep in mind that contributions by you and Atrium Health combined count toward the annual maximum limit.

How can I use the Limited Purpose FSA (LPFSA)?
The Limited Purpose FSA (LPFSA) allows teammates enrolled in the Health Savings Plan to set aside pretax dollars to help pay for qualified dental and vision expenses that occur during a 12-month period.

What is the IRS maximum contribution limit for the LPFSA in 2024?
The IRS maximum contribution is $3,050.

Can I make changes to my Limited Purpose FSA (LPFSA) contribution anytime during the year?
No, it is an IRS regulation that elections can only be made during Annual Enrollment and cannot be changed during the year, with the exception of a Qualifying Life Event.

Will Atrium Health provide seed money to the HSA in 2024?
Full-time teammates who are enrolled in the Health Savings Plan and have an annual salary of $38,000 or less will receive $200 to their Health Savings Account. All teammates earning more than $38,000 can fund their HSA through earning LiveWELL incentives.

If I elect the Co-Pay Plan in 2024:

What happens to the unused dollars I earned in the LiveWELL Incentive Account at the end of the year?
The full account balance will roll over from year to year, if you remain employed by Atrium Health and enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan for the next year.

If I elect the Co-Pay plan in 2024 but in future years decide to elect the Health Savings Plan what will happen to my LiveWELL Incentive Account?
The full account balance of your LiveWELL Incentive Account will roll over each year, if you remain enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan. If you change health plans from the Co-Pay Plan to the Health Savings Plan, any unused balance in your LiveWELL Incentive Account will be forfeited. Teammates will have until April 30, of the following year to have health care expenses from the previous year reimbursed. Please note that over-the-counter medications may be purchased using the LiveWELL Incentive Account.

If I am enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan, where will my LiveWELL Incentives I earn be deposited?
In 2024, teammates will have the opportunity to earn up to 3 incentives by completing LiveWELL activities and programs. Incentive opportunities can earn up to $500 for teammate only coverage and $1,000 for family coverage.

If you are enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan, the LiveWELL Incentives will be deposited into the LiveWELL Incentive Account. This is an account for Atrium Health contributions only and can be used for qualified medical expenses, including over-the-counter medications.

Can I contribute to the LiveWELL Incentive Account?
No, only LiveWELL Incentives you earned can be contributed by Atrium Health to the account.

Will Atrium Health provide seed money to the LiveWELL Incentive Account in 2024?
Full-time teammates who are enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan and have an annual salary of $38,000 or less will receive $200 to their LiveWELL Incentive Account. All teammates earning more than $38,000 can consider the option of contributing to the Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

Why should I contribute to the Flexible Spending Account (FSA)?
The Flexible Spending Account (FSA) allows teammates to set aside pretax dollars to help pay for qualified medical expenses that occur during a 12-month period. This account can only be used with the Co-Pay Plan. You can also use the FSA to pay for over-the-counter medications.

What is the IRS maximum contribution limit for the FSA in 2024?
The IRS maximum contribution is $3,050.

Can I make changes to my contribution to the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) anytime during the year?
No, it is an IRS regulation that elections can only be made during Annual Enrollment and cannot be changed during the year, with the exception of a Qualifying Life Event.

What happens to the unused dollars earned in the LiveWELL Incentive Account when I terminate employment or retire from Atrium Health?
When you terminate employment or retire from Atrium Health your unused funds will be forfeited.

What happens to the unused dollars I contributed to the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) at the end of the year?
You may rollover up to $610 to the next year, per IRS regulations.

What happens to the unused dollars I contributed to the Flexible Spending Account (FSA) when I terminate employment with Atrium Health?
If you leave Atrium Health, you can elect COBRA to continue your FSA. If you do not elect COBRA, any unused funds will be forfeited.

Can I contribute my incentives, such as PPI, MAIP, APP incentives, or PTO Cash-in into my FSA or LiveWELL Incentive Account?
Teammates who are enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan are not able to have their PPI, MAIP, APP Incentives or PTO Cash-in deposited into the FSA because the annual pledged contributions for the FSA cannot be changed per IRS regulations, unless there is a Qualifying Life Event. Nor can these incentives be deposited into the LiveWELL Incentive Account because that is an account for employer-only contributions.

If I enroll in the Co-Pay plan for 2024, and elect an FSA, what dates of service can be reimbursed from my FSA?
You can only be reimbursed for services rendered 1/1/2024 – 12/31/2024 from your FSA. However, if a teammate has a remaining HSA balance, they have the option to pay out of pocket on the medical account owed and then file a claim with Bank of America to pay themselves back from their HSA balance. You can contact Bank of America at 1-866-731-4206 if you would like more information.

If I elect the Co-Pay Plan in 2024 and still have an HSA balance how can I use those funds?
When you have the Co-Pay Plan with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), and still have an HSA balance, you will have one Bank of America debit card. The funds will be accessed in the following order: FSA, LiveWELL Incentive Account (when you earn LiveWELL Incentives), then HSA.

Why can’t I contribute to my Health Savings Account (HSA) if I elect the Co-Pay Plan?
IRS regulations allow for contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA) only if you are enrolled in a high-deductible/consumer-directed health plan.

If I elect the Co-Pay Plan in 2024 will I have the same Bank of America debit card I have today?
It depends. If you were enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan for 2023 and elect to remain enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan for 2024 you will keep the same Bank of America debit card. It will be replaced prior to a 2024 expiration date, if applicable.

If you were enrolled in the Health Savings Plan for 2023 and elect the Co-Pay Plan for 2024, you will receive a new Bank of America debit card that will have your current HSA dollars, any FSA elections and LiveWELL Incentives earned on the one card. The new card will be mailed in early January 2024 and your current card will be deactivated after December 31, 2023. You will continue to have access to your HSA funds balance through the Bank of America portal until you receive your new card. The funds on the new card will be accessed in the following order: FSA, LiveWELL Incentive Account (when you earn LiveWELL Incentives) then HSA.

Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account (DCFSA)

How can I use DCFSA funds?
You can use pretax contributions to the DCFSA to pay for any eligible, work-related dependent daycare expenses you incur – such as licensed daycare centers for your dependent children or adults, summer day camps, nursery schools or after-school care. Unlike the Healthcare FSA, your funds must be in your DCFSA before they can be reimbursed. Eligible dependents include:

  • Children under age 13
  • Disabled dependents of any age who live with you more than eight hours per day, whom you claim on your tax return and who are enrolled in an eligible daycare program

How much can I contribute to my DCFSA?
You can contribute up to $5,000 ($2,500 if married, filing separately) to your DCFSA. This limit may change if:

  • You are considered a “highly compensated” teammate, the limit is subject to reductions based on IRS discrimination testing results
  • Both you and your spouse contribute to a DCFSA (only $5,000 combined is allowed) based on IRS guidelines
  • The $5,000 limit includes DCFSA and utilization of the Dependent Care Back-up and Transitional Child Care benefits
  • Both the DCFSA and the federal tax credit for child and dependent care offer you tax savings on dependent care expenses. It is important to determine which is right for you and which will provide the greatest tax benefit in 2024.

Based on your family’s unique needs, it is recommended that you consult a qualified tax advisor to make your choice on an election and contribution amount for the DCFSA.

Can I request a refund for the DCFSA funds I am not able to use in 2023 due to COVID-19?
At this time, the IRS has not provided guidance on the ability to return unused funds to a DCFSA participant if they changed their election amount midyear due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

What is the Atrium Health Value Network?
The Atrium Health Value Network is a key feature of the 2024 LiveWELL Health Plans. It provides a higher benefit and improved teammate discount for services.

Which providers and facilities are in the Atrium Health Value Network?
All Atrium Health facilities and providers are a part of the Value Network. Providers outside of Atrium Health will have the opportunity to become a part of the Value Network if they meet specific criteria, including accepting the discounted rate for the LiveWELL Health Plan members.

What provider network will be available for teammates or family members who live outside the geographical area where Value, Preferred, or In-Network is available?
You will receive the Preferred Network pricing for claims.

How can I find out which network my Provider is in?

Are there any changes to how the out-of-pocket maximum is met for family?
No, out-of-pocket maximum is calculated the same way as it is today for both LiveWELL Health Plans. For example, on the Health Savings Plan, the family out-of-pocket maximum is $8,000 but no more than $4,000 for any individual family member covered on the plan.

In 2024, teammates will have the opportunity to earn LiveWELL Incentives based on engagement in healthy lifestyle activities.  Incentive opportunities vary by plan.

If I am enrolled in the Health Savings Plan, where will my earned LiveWELL Incentives be deposited?
Your earned LiveWELL Incentives will be deposited into your Health Savings Account (HSA) if you have an active HSA with at least $1 contribution per pay period.

If you are enrolled in the Health Savings Plan without an active HSA, your LiveWELL Incentives will be paid as taxable earnings in your paycheck. (Typical reasons for not having an active HSA include coverage on a governmental plan such as Medicare or TRICARE).

If I am enrolled in the Co-Pay Plan, where will my earned LiveWELL Incentives be deposited?
Your earned LiveWELL Incentives will be paid into your LiveWELL Incentive Account. If you do not have an active LiveWELL Incentive Account at the time of incentive payout, one will be opened for you.

What are the 2024 LiveWELL Incentives?
In 2024, teammates will have the opportunity to earn LiveWELL Incentives based on engagement in healthy lifestyle activities. Incentive opportunities vary by plan.

Is there an Incentive earned for completing the Health Assessment?
There is not a separate incentive earned, but the first step to begin the LiveWELL experience is completing the health assessment.

If I complete activities for incentive(s) or prize drawings before a deadline then end employment or retire prior to the payout date, will I receive the earned incentive(s) or prize drawing?
Teammates are to be in an active employment status and enrolled in one of the Atrium Health medical plans at the time of payout in order to receive earned incentive(s). Teammates are to be in an active employment status to receive prize drawings.

If I have a change in coverage from Individual to Family or from Family to Individual in the middle of the year, will the incentives I’ve earned and received payment for be adjusted accordingly?
Incentives earned and paid prior to a change in coverage will not be adjusted up or down for the new coverage tier. Any incentives earned after the coverage change will be paid at the current coverage level.
