Military Leave

Definition:

There are two categories of military leave:

  • Military Leave for Teammate (self)- a leave for teammates who are inducted or enlists into the US Armed Forces, National Guard or a reserve unit.
  • Military Family Leave
    • Qualifying Exigency- a leave for eligible teammates who have a spouse, child, or a parent serving active duty miliary or with impending orders to serve active
    • Caregiver Leave- a leave for eligible teammates who is the spouse, child, parent or next of kin of a covered servicemember with a serious injury or illness to take unpaid leave to provide care for the servicemember

Military Leave for Teammate (self)

  • Teammates called to military duty (including training) may request the military leave benefit.
  • Teammates will be required to show proof of military status and a copy of their orders.
  • Teammates who are activated due to US operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, or national relief efforts for a particular event (annual training does not qualify), are eligible for supplemental pay paid by Atrium Health equaling any difference between military pay and Atrium Health base pay.
  • Teammates returning to work from Military Leave must complete the Return from Family Care Leave form and upload it in LeavePro prior to the end of the leave.

Military Family Leave: Qualifying Exigency

  • Eligible teammates may use this leave for reasons such as short-term notice deployment, military events and related activities, childcare and school activities, financial and legal arrangements, counseling, rest and recuperation, post-deployment activities, or for other similar related reasons.
  • Teammates have the option to go unpaid or use PTO if available to receive pay during leave.
  • Teammates returning to work from Military Family Leave must complete the Return from Military Family Care Leave form and upload it in LeavePro prior to the end of the leave.

Military Family Leave: Caregiver Leave

  • Eligible teammates may take up to 26 weeks of leave to help care for a qualifying covered servicemember.
  • For married teammates who are approved for Caregiver Leave, time away will be limited to a total of 26 weeks off between the two of them when leave is for military caregiver leave or is for a combination of military caregiver leave and any other FMLA type of leave.
  • Teammates have the option to go unpaid or use PTO if available to receive pay during leave.
  • Teammates returning to work from Military Family Leave must complete the Return from Military Family Care Leave form and upload it in LeavePro prior to the end of the leave. 

Educational Leave

Definition:

Leave option available to teammates needing time away to study in a job-related course leading to a degree or certification.

Additional Information & Next Steps

  • Area of study must be one that will provide benefit to Atrium Health upon the return to work by the teammate.
  • Granted for a period up to 12 months on a continuous basis.
  • Approval for Educational Leave is at the sole discretion of the department leadership team.
  • No job protection is associated with this leave option.
  • Cannot be used to extend a leave of absence beyond a teammate’s FMLA protection.
  • PTO is paid out in one lump sum payment at the start of the leave.
  • Teammates do not accrue PTO during their leave.
  • Teammates returning from an Educational Leave will be put back in their previous position if that position is still vacant.
  • If a teammate’s job is not available, the teammate will be placed in the Career Transition Program where they will be provided with resources to assist with finding a job within the organization. 

Personal Leave

Definition:

Leave option available to teammates needing time away from work to deal with extraordinary personal matters.

Additional Information & Next Steps

  • Personal leave is only granted when Paid Time Off (PTO) is exhausted and the situation does not meet requirements for another leave of absence.
  • Granted for a period of at least 31 days up to a maximum of 90 days of continuous leave time per calendar year.
  • Approval for Personal Leave is at the sole discretion of the department leadership team.
  • No job protection is associated with this leave option.
  • Cannot be used to extend a leave of absence beyond a teammate’s FMLA protection.
  • PTO is paid out in one lump sum payment at the start of the leave.
  • Teammates do not accrue PTO during their leave.
  • Teammates returning from an Personal Leave will be put back in their previous position if that position is still vacant.
  • If a teammate’s job is not available, the teammate will be placed in the Career Transition Program where they will be provided with resources to assist with finding a job within the organization. 

Organ & Bone Marrow Donor Leave 

Definition: 

Leave option available to eligible teammates (teammates who are in a 20+ standard hour position), who serve as organ or bone marrow donors.  

Additional Information & Next Steps

  • Teammates who serve as organ donors are eligible for up to six weeks of their base pay who serve as organ donors for the purpose of transplantation.
  • Teammates who serve as organ donors are eligible for up to seven days of their base pay for bone marrow donation.
  • Teammates must provide complete and sufficient medical documentation in support of the request for living organ and bone marrow donation time off.
  • Documentation indicating the need for leave should be completed by the teammate’s health care provider that is performing the procedure or surgery.
  • Teammates must present a medical release to return to work to certify that the teammate is able to perform the essential functions of the job. 

Next Steps

Teammates who would like to proceed with requesting a leave of absence, can log into LeavePro to begin this process. To request a leave in LeavePro, teammate should select “Plan a Leave.” For the type, teammates should select “Other” followed by the applicable type associated reason.
