#123forEquity

What is the Equity of Care Pledge?

The Equity of Care Pledge (#123forEquity) is a national campaign to eliminate health care disparities. The #123forEquity campaign asks hospital and health care system leaders to commit to acting on three specific areas that can improve health equity:

  1. Increase the collection and use of race, ethnicity and language preference (REAL) data
  2. Increase cultural competency training
  3. Increase diversity in leadership and governance

What is Atrium Health doing to further these goals?

Atrium Health began the execution of the Equity of Care Pledge in 2016 and a variety of activities ensued. Below is a snippet of this work:

Goal Area #1: Collection & Use of REAL Data

We are transforming how we collect race, ethnicity, language preference (REAL), and sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) data. One example of this is the creation of the “Demographic Data Wall” – a tool we use to identify disparities in the following areas:

  • Population Health Measures
  • Mortality, Length of Stay and Readmissions
  • Patient Experience
  • Core Measures

Goal Area #2: Cultural Competency Training

A task force has been working for over a year to develop cultural competence education initiatives tailored to the following job groups:

  • Physicians and ACPs
  • RNs
  • Other Clinical Professionals
  • Non-Clinical, Patient-Facing Teammates

Goal Area #3: Diversity in Leadership and Governance

We have created and implemented leadership development and pipeline programs for talented leaders with diverse backgrounds at Atrium Health. We are also working to combine and enhance three high school pipeline programs focused on students from underrepresented backgrounds:

  • PATCH
  • Physician Diversity Mentoring Program
  • HEROES Program
