Extension of Certain Time Frames for Employee Benefits Plans, Participants, and Beneficiaries Affected by the COVID-19 Outbreak

During these challenging times of the COVID-19 National Emergency, the IRS has relaxed rules around timeframes for submitting certain benefit elections and changes. The timeframes are extended beginning March 1, 2020 until sixty (60) days after the announced end of the National Emergency.

Examples of extended timeframes include submitting benefit changes due to a Qualifying Life Event and electing COBRA continuation coverage.

CORE Connect is now available to all teammates. After the initial benefits enrollment period, you may change your elections upon new eligibility, when you have a qualifying life event or during Open Enrollment.  


If you need to submit enrollment changes, start in CORE Connect. On the Me screen, click the Benefits tile to view your current, past and future benefits enrollments.

Update Your Dependent Information

Update your dependent information before submitting a Life Event change or enrolling in new benefits. 

In CORE Connect, start on the Me screen then click the Benefits tile. Once in the Benefits section, click People to Cover tile to add, edit or remove your dependents.   

You can remove dependents from the People to Cover section only if the contact has never been designated as a benefit dependent or beneficiary. To delete a benefit dependent or beneficiary from the People to Cover section, contact Atrium Health Benefits at 704-631-1500, choose Option 1.   

Add Dependent Social Security Number

The legislative identifier is the term CORE Connect uses for social security number. To add your dependent’s social security number in CORE Connect, follow these steps:

  1. Start in CORE Connect 
  2. On the Me screen, click on Benefits 
  3. Click on People to Cover 
  4. To edit an existing dependent, click on the dependent’s name 
    • Scroll down to National Identifiers
    • Click the Drop-Down Arrow
    • Click on “Add” 
    • Complete the “Country” field
    • Complete the National ID Type as Social Security Number
    • Enter in the dependent’s 9-digit Social Security Number 
  5. Click Submit 

If you experience a problem updating the social security number, please email the HRServiceCenter@AtriumHealth.org. Include a screenshot of the page and notate at what step you encountered an issue. Providing these details will help the HR Service Center assist you.  

Enroll in Benefits during a Life Event 

If you are a benefits eligible teammate and have experienced one of these qualifying life event changes in the last 31 days, start in CORE Connect to enroll in benefits during a Life Event. 

1.  In CORE Connect, start on the Me screen then click the Benefits app

2.  Click the Report a Life Event tile to record a life event for benefit enrollment opportunities
Note: if you need to upload supporting documents, refer to the Manage Document Records in CORE Connect section below.

3.  Select a Life Event from the list of options
     a.  Add a new child to your coverage as part of birth, adoption or legal placement
     b.  Add spouse and/or dependent children due to marriage
     c.  Make changes to Health Savings Account (HSA) enrollment/contributions
     d.  Update/designate beneficiaries for life insurance plans
     e.  Note: If you would like to initiate any of the following Life Events, please contact Atrium Health Benefits at 704-631-1500, choose Option 1. 
               i.    
For Life Event - Divorce, the authorized document to upload is Divorce Decree
               ii.   For Life Event – Legal Separation, the authorized document to upload is Legal Separation document
               iii.  For Life Event – Loss of Coverage Elsewhere, the authorized document to upload is Proof of End of Benefits Coverage
               iv.  For Life Event – Gain in Coverage Elsewhere, the authorized document to upload is Proof of Start of New Benefits Coverage

4.  You may then proceed to make benefits enrollment changes based on the life event selected.

5.  In CORE Connect, return to the Me screen, then click the Your Benefits tile. 

6.  In the top section of the Benefits page, click the Make Changes button to update your benefits options.

The benefits change(s) you make must be consistent with your qualifying life event. For questions, contact Atrium Health Benefits at: 704-631-1500, choose Option 1.

Manage Document Records in CORE Connect 

You may need to add, edit or upload documents to the CORE Connect system to be eligible for specific benefits. In CORE Connect, start on the Me screen, then click the Personal Information tile. On the Documents Record page, you can manage your documents and associated attachments, such as: 

  • Certificates 
  • Birth and marriage records 
  • Identification records 
  • Employment details 
  • Benefits records, etc 

Note: Documents for leave of absence, short-term disability or return to work are not captured in CORE Connect.  

Reminder: Teammates may request mid-year changes to benefits when they experience a qualifying life event. Requests for changes must be submitted within 31 days of the qualifying life event along with supporting documentation. See the table below for documentation needed and how to submit it.
